DIY the green way

Knowing where to start with DIY is one thing. Knowing where to start with eco DIY is a whole other ball game.

Whether it’s an electrician you need to sort out the light fittings, a plumber to sort out your bathroom or even a cleaner to pop in once a week, if eco is on your mind you’ll want to do it the green way.

Here’s the good news: there are businesses out there that specialise in sustainability when it comes to fixing up your home, and there is a website out there dedicated to helping you find them.

New website Oneflare is a marketplace for home services – and it has a whole host of eco-friendly businesses on its books, from painters, removal services, plumbers and electricians to cleaners, renovation experts and builders.

We spoke to Tommy Lim, one of the three founders of Oneflare.

Finding eco service providers

Oneflare is connected to more than 90,000 businesses across the country. By submitting a request through Oneflare customers can expect five quotes back from local service providers.

And you can specifically request eco-friendly quotes.

Included in Oneflare’s bank of businesses are green cleaners who specialise in environmentally friendly products, eco electricians who specialise in energy-efficient lighting and energy-efficient appliances, and environmentally friendly plumbers who specialise in water saving devices like taps and shower heads.

Fast service & eco guarantee

Oneflare has taken over $2 million worth of service requests to date, and handled over 4,000 requests.

The company’s record is five quotes in 14 minutes, but the average customer gets at least three quotes by the end of the day.

Oneflare offers a service guarantee, too, explains director & co-founder Tommy Lim. “Our Home Care Guarantee is offered for some providers, with cover for up to $500, so Oneflare will send someone else to fix the job. Quotes are obligation-free.”

How to find an eco DIY expert

Once you’re on the Oneflare website, click on the large red button on the homepage that says ‘Request a Home Service’.

Then fill in the form, stating which service you need, when you want the job done, where the job is and what you need done. In this last section, state that you are seeking a green DIY expert.

Oneflare will then contact its service providers in your local area and invite them to quote for the work. By the end of the day, you should expect to have your quotes back.

You will get details of the businesses, their Oneflare rating and their quote. Then it’s up to you to contact and hire the business you like.
