| No more ripping pages out of home design magazines and having to search the pile on the kitchen table for that lamp you’re loving... or is it in your handbag... or, maybe you left it in the car? With sites like Houzz, Pinterest and Modenus, inspiration (and that lamp you love) is just a couple of clicks away. ![]() Houzz lets you create your own Ideabook by browsing over 150,000 photos and 600,000+ books assembled by others. All you have to do is sign up and start browsing. I happen to be contemplating a kitchen remodel so I created a “kitchen” book and started clicking on photos I liked. I can label what I like about them, such as “lighting” or “backsplash” to keep my thoughts organized. I can also find designers in my area and check out their Ideabooks to get a sense of their style. I also like the quality of the contribution by designers on Houzz. Take Paul Anater, a renowned kitchen and bath designer in Florida, for example. His series on flooring alone is the most extensive I’ve ever seen. (Check out his Ideabook on “The Pros and Cons of Exotic Woods” where he sparks a heated discussion from Aussies on Spotted Gum floors and the plight of the koala.) Follow Houzz (and Paul) on Twitter at @houzz and @paul_anater. ![]() Modenus.com is a free resource that connects everyone involved in the design process – the designer, contractor, architect, manufacturer and client – and simplifies the search for products and inspiration. Founder, Veronika Miller recognizes that we often have to browse because we don't know what we're looking for until we find it. She created Modenus to have an intelligent search function that learns from each user. As you select your favorites, it starts bringing products of interest to you. I especially like Modenus Before & Afters and the wide range of products they feature from around the world. They scour the design shows and report back via daily blogs so you’re always in the know. Follow Veronika and Modenus on Twitter . ![]() While Houzz and Modenus collect your home design ideas, Pinterest is a virtual pinboard for anything you’re interested in. As you’re Googling around finding things you love, you can “pin” these links to boards you create. It’s kind of like taking your bookmarks and making them public (and prettier since they’re filled with pictures). I’m a big fan of corkboards, so I love the idea of being able to have as many as I want and the ability to take them with me wherever I go. I’m new to Pinterest and am already finding it addictive. I have boards for my kitchen, lighting, blogs, recipes, books I love, words to live by.....it goes on. Here’s a Beginner’s Guide to Pinterest article that helped me get started. You have to be invited to join by Pinterest or a current user. Feel free to email me for an invite at denese.bottrell@gmail.com. Follow Pinterest on Twitter. Get inspired, start browsing and share your Houzz, Modenus and Pinterest experiences with Design Everyday. |
